Les Miserables 25th Anniversary

I just saw the TV airing of the Les Miserables 25th Anniversary. It was fantastic as expected. I'm a huge fan of musicals and Les Miserables delivers every time.

I loved seeing Ms. Lea Salonga play Fantine. She is just amazing. Here is her version of I Dreamed A Dream.

And wow! Who knew Nick Jonas could sing like this? I know he's been getting lots of negative reviews for his performance but this is a huge step up from the usual Jonas Brothers gig so he deserves some praise. Here he is singing A Little Fall of Rain with Samantha Barks as Eponine (my favorite character).

For Les Miserables lovers like me, here's another video for you: One Day More.

And another video of One Day More with the original cast in 1985. So amazing!!! I wish I could have watched it live.

Homecooked Japanese Dinner

It's funny how I had to travel all the way to the United States to gain an enhanced appreciation of Asian culture. When I spent the summer of 2004 in Oxford, UK I made so many friends from different parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and reached a point when I no longer wanted to go back home. In the three weeks I was there I partied like a rock star, learned bits and pieces of Swiss-German, French, and Portuguese, and of course mastered the art of mimicking the English accent and even a little cockney. I eventually got over my Oxford hangover but continued to be fascinated with the points of difference in every culture, particularly when compared to my own.

When I moved to the US in 2009, I (ironically) made so many friends from all over Asia and have been fortunate enough to once again immerse myself in an environment of cultural exchange. It has been so much fun to point out the similarities and nuances in our history, origin, convention, and culture. Coming from a country that has been conquered and "re-programmed" over many years, spending time with my friends has made me admire the strong cultural identities that the people in their countries still exhibit. Of course, spending time with my Asian friends also means tasting their food so I have been equally lucky to have sampled authentic Thai, Korean, Schezuan, Taiwanese, and Indian cuisine.

Tonight, it was my Japanese friend's turn to show off his wife's culinary prowess. I have been looking forward to this dinner for weeks now because I absolutely love Japanese food and this dinner certainly did not disappoint. I loved every single dish and would have scraped off the leftovers on each plate if it weren't so impolite. We started off with some drinks and friendly conversation around the little coffee table in their apartment and capped the night off by vandalizing their dining table.

Riding Passenger Side

The thing I love about riding in the passenger seat is being able to stare out the window and think about nothing at all. Sometimes a cloud or two will catch my eye and on rare occasions I actually remember to bring out my phone and snap a picture or two. Fortunately, today was one of those rare occasions.

I'm so glad to be rid of the cold weather. The sky is saying it will be spring soon!

Tunnicliffs Tavern

Had brunch at this lovely pub in DC called Tunnicliffs Tavern. They had a nice, heated outdoor sitting area, which was understandably full so we decided to sit inside where the ambiance reminded me of an Irish bar (probably because it is one).

We decided to share dishes - two savory and two sweet. Very happy with the outcome and will definitely try to come back.
